The
place
As soon as you leave Farfa Valley along the
sharply winding roads that climb the south-facing hills, Mompeo
Sabino appears gathered on a hilltop. The view is unique:
a 360 degree panorama over woods and vineyards, olives and
wheat, valleys and hills, churches and castles. And the air,
clear and healthy like everything that is produced here. |
The
Viarino olive mill
Against this background, at first glace far
from modernity and technology, a group of forward looking
local people, led by the mayor of Mompeo, created Viarino,
a modern olive oil mill in a place where olive oil has very
ancient roots, as has been proved by local archaeological
finds as well as the medieval castle of Mompeo which houses
an old olive press. |

A
DOP quality olive oil
The Sabina area has protected DOP status for olives obtained
from the classic local cultivars Leccino, Moraiolo, Frantoio
and other native cultivars, and this has allowed Viarino to
create "Il Mompeo" extra virgin olive oil, aimed
at people, whether in Italy or further afield, who appreciate
top quality foods. |
Characteristics
of the oil
Il
Mompeo extra virgin olive oil is naturally decanted in stainless-steel
vats, resulting in a transparent oil an intense green in colour
with golden highlights, while the aroma is one of olive with
hints of fruit and spices. To the palate it is soft and full,
delicately bitter with a slight but persistent flavour of
sweet ripe almonds. A special taste of Sabina. |
